Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels?
The only real difference is the type of hitch used to tow the trailer. Travel Trailers have a ball hitch, not unlike a conventional caravan, whereas a Fifth Wheel attaches to the towing vehicles bed using an articulated fifth wheel hitch.
What sizes of trailer do you offer?
In the Fifth Wheel range the sizes start at 26ft up to 54ft and in Travel Trailer range they start at 15ft - 45ft
Can I tow an American trailer on a normal British driving licence?
Customers with category C1E on their full British driving licence can tow an American Trailer. This category is on all pre 1997 licences and customers with a post 1997 licence who wish to tow can take another test to gain this category.
Can I tow an American Trailer using a non American towing Vehicle?
The law states that trailers over 2.3 metres wide and or 8 metres long have to be towed by a vehicle weighing over 3.5T gross. Realistically this means that only large commercial vehicles and American pickups such as Dodge Ram 2500/3500 and Ford F250'/ F350s would be able to tow these trailers. However the STT Group do stock 7ft 6" American Trailers, with slideouts, for customers not wishing to purchase an 8ft trailer or who have a vehicle under 3.5 T gross.
What is a Slideout and how does it work?
Slideouts are sections of the trailers side which extend out horizontally using a motor when the vehicle is stationary. This provides extra living space and adds around 3 ft to the width of the trailer. The slideout is accommodated within the vehicles structure and is designed to fit around the furniture inside. The number of slideouts varies depending on the model, size and layout of the trailer.
What size trailer can I tow legally?
The maximum full train length (truck and trailer) that can be towed legally is 59ft 4"
Do American trailers convene to British Safety Standards and Road Regulations?
The STT Group carry out a number of procedures to make sure our Trailers conform to Road Regulations and Safety standards, for examples adding break-away cables and mechanical handbrakes. You can be sure that all our units undergo a rigorous PDI Inspection before you take delivery.
